Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) description

Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) is an organosilicon compound with the chemical formula C6H18OSi2. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a slightly sweet odor. HMDSO is synthesized through the hydrolysis and subsequent condensation of chlorosilanes. Its molecular structure consists of two trimethylsilyl groups connected by an oxygen atom, making it a member of the siloxanes family. This structure imparts unique chemical properties, such as stability and reactivity under specific conditions.

Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) application

Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) is a crucial compound in modern industrial applications, offering versatility and performance across multiple fields. Its ability to form protective, adhesive, and functional coatings makes it indispensable in sectors ranging from electronics and automotive to biomedicine and advanced materials science.

  • HMDSO plasma coating

HMDSO plasma coating involves the use of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as a precursor in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process. In this process, HMDSO molecules are introduced into a plasma environment where they are ionized and fragmented into reactive species. These species then interact with the substrate surface to form a thin, protective film.

  • HMDSO plasma polymerization

Hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) plasma polymerization is the process used to create thin polymeric coatings on various substrates through the deposition of HMDSO in a plasma state. HMDSO plasma polymerization is a versatile and effective method for enhancing the surface properties of a wide range of materials. Its applications span various industries, providing solutions for improved durability, biocompatibility, and protective barriers.

  • Capping agents in the production of silicone products

HMDOS is employed in the manufacture of various silicone products, such as hydrogen silicone oil, vinyl silicone oil, dimethyl silicone oil, amino silicone oil, etc.  The Si-O-Si bonds in the molecular chain structure of hexamethyldisiloxane have a high bond energy (460.5 kJ/mol), which imparts polysiloxanes made with it as a capping agent with excellent thermal stability and chemical stability. HMDOS are also widely used as cleaning agents, release agents, adhesives, moisture-proof agents, and coating additives.

  • Hexamethyldisiloxane for skincare products

As a volatile silicone, HMDSO evaporates quickly from the skin’s surface, leaving behind no residue. This makes it ideal for use in different formula where a non-greasy finish is desired, such as in light moisturizers and makeup primers. Benefiting from their ultra-low molecular weight, ultra-low viscosity’s HMDSO exhibit exceptional volatility. Therefore, HMDSO can be used in some very unique cosmetic applications, such as foaming masks. Foaming masks are products that rapidly form bubbles on the skin’s surface during use. The foaming agents in these masks typically use ether substances or HMDSO. However, ether substances generally take 15-30 seconds to produce noticeable bubbles, which is not ideal for consumer experience. Using HMDSO as the foaming agent allows the mask to form bubbles quickly within 5 seconds. When HMDSO is used in combination with ether substances, it enables the bubbles to form rapidly and evenly.

  • Cleaning agents for precision equipment

HMDSO can dissolve a wide variety of organic contaminants, including oils, lubricants, photoresist residues, and dust without corroding most metals, plastics, and rubbers, making it suitable for cleaning precision equipment. HMDSO has a very low surface tension, so it can easily penetrate into small cracks and pores to remove dirt. HMDSO is highly volatile, so it dries quickly without leaving any residue.

  • Stationary phase in gas chromatography (GC)

HMDSO serves as a precursor for creating stationary phases through silylation process. The HMDSO-derived stationary phases can reduced tailing, increase inertness and enhance thermal stability. HMDSO-silylated columns are widely used in GC for the analysis of various compounds, including: environmental pollutants, pharmaceuticals products, food and flavor components, etc.
