Description of Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS)

Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) is an indispensable key modifying material for the production of downstream silicone products such as silicone rubber and silicone fluid. It can significantly improve the performance of organic silicon materials such as water repellency, reinforcement, and extensibility. HMDS is also used as a protecting agent for the synthesis of some drugs in pharmaceutical industry. In addition, HMDS is used as an adhesion promoter, cleaner, and anti-etching agent in the semiconductor industry.

Our hexamethyldisilazane has the advantages of low impurities, no solvent residues, and minimal non-volatile substances, ensuring high purification levels. The purity of this product is maintained at 99.5%, can also reach up to electronic grade standards of 99.95%.

Application of Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS)

Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) has a wide range of applications across various industries:

  • Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) has several applications in the pharmaceutical synthesis

In pharmaceutical synthesis, Hexamethyldisilazane’s applications underscore its role in facilitating the synthesis of critical pharmaceutical agents through its action as a silylation reagent that protects sensitive functional groups during chemical reactions.

    • Protection of Amino Groups: Although the Si-N bond is extremely sensitive to water, hexamethyldisilazane HMDS can be used to protect amino groups when reagents that cannot come into contact with water are required in the reaction.
    • Protection of Carbonyl Groups: In organic synthesis, carbonyl groups (such as aldehydes and ketones) must be protected to withstand the attack of various reagents. Commonly used protection groups are acetals and ketals, as well as thioacetals and thioketals. With the development of organic synthesis, some new types of carbonyl protecting groups have also emerged, and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) is one of them.
    • Protection of Carboxyl Groups:Carboxyl groups are present in many compounds with biological activity and synthetic value. Although carboxyl groups are not as reactive as amino or aldehyde groups, they often need to be protected in synthesis to allow specific reactions at other sites. In the synthesis of certain antibiotics, hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) can be used to protect carboxyl groups, and the protection can be achieved by refluxing in dichloromethane with trimethylsilyl iodide as a catalyst.
    • Protection of Hydroxyl Groups: When oxidizing, acetylating, halogenating with phosphorus halides or hydrogen halides, or performing dehydration reactions on compounds containing hydroxyl groups, it is necessary to protect the hydroxyl groups. When certain hydroxyl-containing compounds undergo oxidation, acylation, halogenation with phosphorus halides or hydrogen halides, or dehydration reactions, the hydroxyl group must be protected. Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) has become one of the most commonly used methods for protecting hydroxyl groups in organic synthesis.

Apart from protecting agent, Hexamethyldisilazane is also used as catalyst, and activator for  the synthesis of some nucleoside drugs and antibiotics.

  • Manufacture of lithium-ion batteries

Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) positively impacts the stability and electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries. Adding a small amount (0.5%) of HMDS to the electrolyte significantly enhances the storage and thermal stability of the electrolyte and improves the electrochemical performance and cyclability of lithium-ion batteries. Currently, some companies are already using HMDS as a stabilizer for lithium-ion battery electrolytes.

  • HMDS is a commonly used surface modifier for aerogels

Aerogels are three-dimensional nanoporous materials with extremely high porosity, composed of nanoparticles or polymers, with air as the dispersing medium. Surface modification of the gel is an effective method for preparing crack-free, bulk silica aerogels. Commonly used surface modifiers include hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS), trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS), hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), and others.

  • Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) is the primary functional additive used for the modification of fumed silica

Fumed silica modified with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) changes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, significantly enhancing its dispersibility and affinity with raw rubber. This can effectively improve the processing performance of silicone rubber, increase production efficiency, and enhance the transparency and mechanical properties of silicone rubber.

  • HMDS is used as adhesion promoter for photoresists

Electronic-grade hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) is commonly used as an adhesion promoter for photoresists. It is typically sprayed onto the silicon wafer surface in either liquid or vapor phase to modify the surface, changing its properties from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. This enhances the adhesion of the photoresist to the silicon wafer and inhibits the penetration of etching solutions, effectively improving resist performance.
