Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fluid is widely used as a damping oil in various applications due to its unique properties that make it ideal for absorbing and dissipatenergy. Its properties such as precisely controlled viscosity, shear thinning behavior, low VTC, low surface tensions make PDMS fluid as an excellent damping fluid. The common applications of PMDS as damping fluid are as following:
- Automotive: Automotive brake fluid is based on low-viscosity PDMS fluid at 20cSt. Different standard (DOT 3,4,5, SAEJ1705) have been released from decades. PDMS damping fluid for automotive engine cooling fans, for engine’s torsional vibration damping has been put into practical use.
- Industrial Equipment: PDMS fluid is used in various industrial machines and equipment to reduce noise and vibration, improving the overall performance and lifespan of the machinery. PDMS fluid is also used as a damping fluid inside shock-resistant pressure gauges. Its main function is to rely on its viscous resistance to attenuate the kinetic energy of moving mechanical parts, thereby effectively shortening the time of mechanical oscillation or motion. Its primary role is to resist the vibrations of the working environment and reduce the pulsation effects of the medium pressure, thus ensuring the stability and accuracy of the instrument.
- Aerospace: PDMS fluid is used in gyroscopes, accelerometers, and other instruments to dampen vibrations and ensure accurate measurements.
- Other industries: PDMS oil finds its application in electronics, medical devices, consumer products etc to dampen vibrations and protect sensitive components from damage.
Silicone damping fluid selection guide
The viscosity of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most critical parameters when selecting a damping fluid, as it directly affects the performance and effectiveness of the damping system. Different viscosities of silicone oil have different damping characteristics and are suitable for different application scenarios:
- Low Viscosity PDMS fluid (<100 cSt):
- Fast response time, suitable for applications requiring quick response and high-frequency vibrations.
- Good fluidity, easy to fill and discharge, suitable for small or complex damping systems.
- Low damping force, suitable for applications with high requirements for motion accuracy, such as precision instruments.
- Weak damping effect, not suitable for applications requiring high damping force.
- Significant viscosity change at high temperatures, which may affect the stability of damping performance.
- Medium Viscosity PDMS fluid (100-1000 cSt):
- Balanced damping force and response speed, suitable for most damping applications.
- Good temperature stability, viscosity is less affected by temperature.
- Widely used in various instruments, meters, and automotive shock absorbers.
- For extremely high or low-frequency vibrations, the damping effect may not be ideal.
- High Viscosity Silicone fluid (>1000 cSt):
- Strong damping force, suitable for applications requiring high damping force, such as heavy machinery and large shock absorbers.
- Good temperature stability, viscosity is less affected by temperature.
Apart from viscosity factor, the response time requirements of applications, working temperature range and vibration frequency should also be taken into account for the selection of silicone damping fluid.
